On August 23, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation S. V. Lavrov held talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Patriots Abroad of the Syrian Arab Republic, Faisal Mikdad, who is in Moscow on a working visit.
There was an in-depth exchange of opinions on topical topics of the international and regional agenda. Discussing the crisis around Ukraine S. V. Lavrov highly appreciated the principled position of the SAR leadership in support of the Russian special military operation efforts of our country to uphold a fair peace order.
Special attention was given to the situation in and around Syria, focusing on the prospects for promoting a comprehensive settlement in the SAR on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
The need for unconditional respect for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Syria, and the legitimate right of Syrians to determine their country’s future for themselves is emphasized.
The ministers discussed in detail the work of the Astana Format, noting its important role as the most effective international mechanism for promoting sustainable stabilization in the SAR. At the same time, the mood of Moscow and Damascus was confirmed to further contribute to the creation of the productive activities of the Inter-Syrian Constitutional Committee and the creation of favorable conditions for this.
On the Russian side, the importance of activating the process of normalization of Syria’s relations with other Arab countries in the interest of the speedy resumption of its full-format participation in the work of the LAG.
During a discussion of the humanitarian situation in the CAD, the need for increased international assistance to overcome the consequences of the long-standing crisis and the country’s post-conflict recovery was emphasized. In this context, it is of special importance to ensure the clear implementation of the regulations adopted in July c. g. resolution 2642 of the UN Security Council, providing, in addition to extending for six months the term of the cross-border regime of hump supplies to Syria, the implementation of projects of early restoration of basic infrastructure.
Moscow and Damascus are confirmed to continue energetic efforts to stimulate the return of Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons.
S. V. Lavrov strongly condemned the regular Israeli strikes on the territory of sovereign Syria. It was emphasized that such irresponsible actions are a gross violation of the fundamental norms of international law and must be stopped.
There was an interesting and objective discussion of topical issues of Russian-Syrian multilateral mutually beneficial cooperation and ways of its further expansion, said a release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russian Federation.
