Maiden Bangladesh tour of Kovind takes off

 

Dhaka, 15 December 2021 :   

 

­            Indian President Ram Nath Kovind has arrived in Dhaka on a three-day visit to attend the celebrations marking the Golden Jubilee of Bangladesh’s Independence and Mujib Year.

 

The president arrived at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 11:10 am on Wednesday aboard a special Indian Airlines flight.

 

Kovind was accompanied by first lady Savita Kovind, and daughter Swati Kovind.

 

President Md. Abdul Hamid received his Indian counterpart with a bouquet at the airport while Rashida Khanam also presented a bouquet to the Indian first lady at the airport. The red carpet was rolled out for his reception

 

Maintaining the health guidelines due to pandemic situation, the Indian president was given a guard of honour with 21-gun salute by a smartly turned out contingent drawn from Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force there. The visiting delegation members also followed health rules, including wearing masks and maintaining social distancing, on the occasion

 

The state guest also inspected the parade and subsequently both the Presidents introduced the respective countries delegation to each other.

 

India’s education minister and two parliament members alongside several seniorofficials are also accompanying the president on his maiden Bangladesh visit.

 

            Liberation War Affairs Minister A K M Mozammel Haque, Agriculture Minister Dr. Muhammad Abdur Razzaque, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam, among others, were present at the airport to welcome the Indian president. Besides, dean of diplomatic core, cabinet secretary, chiefs of the three services, principal secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office, Inspector General of Police, secretaries concerned to the President’s office and senior civil and military officials were also present there.

 

The airport area was decorated for the President’s arrival and Bangladeshi and Indian flags flew atop the terminal.

 

Two large portraits of the two presidents were set up on either side of the VVIP terminal and a large welcome sign, carrying greetings written in both Bangla and English, was also raised.  

 

The Indian President placed wreath at the Memorial to pay homage to the memory of Bangladesh’s nine-month-long 1971 Liberation War martyrs at the National Memorial in Savar on the outskirts of the capital.

 

            On his arrival there, Liberation War Affairs Minister A K M Mozammel Haque, Agriculture Minister Dr. Muhammad Abdur Razzaque, State Minister for Housing and Public Works Sharif Ahmed and General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 9 Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army Major General Shaheenul Haque and high civil and military officials welcomed the Indian president.

 

A smartly turned-out contingent drawn from Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force gave him a guard of honour while the bugles played the last post.

 

Kovind  planted a sapling of “Ashok Tree” on the memorial premises and signed the visitors’ book on the occasion.

 

Kovind left the National Memorial around 12:50 pm for Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum in the capital’s Dhanmondi 32 to pay tributes to the country’s founding Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the greatest Bangalee of all times. 

 

Later, Indian President also visited the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum on Dhanmondi to pay respect to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He placed wrath in front of the Mural of Bangabandhu to pay glowing tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Rehana the younger daughter of Bangabandhu, received him there. Ram Nath Kovind visited the museum and signed the visitor’s book.
