Russia interested in completing the Syria settlement process : Lavrov
Dhaka August 26 2022 :
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks during a meeting with UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen in Moscow on August 25, 2022.
Mr Special Envoy,
Colleagues,
We are delighted to meet again.
We are sincerely interested in completing the Syria settlement process under UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and the decisions adopted at the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi in 2018.
Some of our Western colleagues have been spreading information of late that, in the context of the special military operation in Ukraine, Russia has lost interest in achieving the settlement in Syria. These statements have nothing to do with reality. They do not reflect our consistent policy to seek a comprehensive settlement in Syria, which includes support for your mission.
Today I expect to discuss at length the developments regarding the preparations for the Constitutional Committee’s next meeting. We are interested in seeing that committee, which emerged following an initiative by the Astana three nations, work steadily, efficiently and, most importantly, in the most favourable conditions.
I would also like to hear your assessments of the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2642, specifically, the Security Council’s decisions on the need to increase humanitarian assistance to Syria and the implementation of projects aimed at the expeditious restoration of basic infrastructure.
Welcome again. I hope we will have a productive conversation.
